The DPC Drop: Week of June 29

Dear Chefs,

The hot weather is great for crop growth, and new harvests are arriving every week. It’s exciting to watch the fields change so quickly this time of year as summer favorites continue to size up and ripen.

We expect July to bring on all our cherry tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, Shishito and Jimmy Nardello peppers, eggplants, and more!

The summer solstice has arrived, which means summer is officially here on the farm — and with it, some very early mornings. We’ve been lucky to have a week of cooler temperatures, but the forecast shows heat on the way. As a result, much of our harvesting and field work happens before the hottest part of the day. The crew is often out shortly after sunrise, picking and packing vegetables, planting seedlings, or working in the tunnels to weed and trellis while it is still cool. By midday, the pace shifts to tasks that can be done in the shade (or indoors!). Working with the weather is a constant part of farming, and during hot stretches, an early start helps both the vegetables and the people caring for them.
